A series of graduated penalties recently introduced to complement the previous option of deregistration for breaches of rules and regulations governing the operation of registered charities. These sanctions or penalties may include monetary (cash), suspension of tax receipting privileges and suspension of ability to receive funds from other charities depending upon the type of infraction and whether it is a first or repeat infraction. In addition to the sanctions, Canada Revenue Agency, Charities directorate intends to publicize breaches on its website (www.cra-arc.gc.ca) which also provides the identity of the Directors and Trustees of the penalized charity.
